Life Drawing

This workshop offers a relaxed introduction to both life drawing and plein air drawing for artists of all abilities. Participants will draw from a live model, still life and from the surrounding landscape, focusing on observation, basic techniques, and personal expression. Artists are welcome to work in pencil, charcoal, ink, or other portable media.

Basic drawing supplies will be provided. Demonstrations, individualized feedback, and group discussion will support both beginners building foundational skills and experienced artists looking to deepen their practice.

We’ll cover carving techniques, and inking methods, with step-by-step guidance throughout. The process is accessible, hands-on, and rewarding for beginners, while also offering creative possibilities for those with more experience.

All supplies are provided, including linoleum blocks, carving tools, ink, and paper. Participants will leave with their carved block and a small edition of their own prints. No prior experience is necessary.

Marbling / Suminagashi

This workshop explores the ancient art of paper marbling, including the traditional Japanese technique of suminagashi, or “floating ink.” Participants will learn how to create beautiful, one-of-a-kind patterns by floating inks and paints on water and transferring the designs onto paper.

This class is perfect for beginners and those curious about experimenting with color and pattern. We’ll cover basic techniques, demonstrate a variety of effects, and allow plenty of time for hands-on exploration. All materials are provided, and you’ll leave with a collection of your own marbled papers to use for artwork, bookmaking, or gifts. No prior experience is necessary.

Bookmaking

This introductory bookmaking workshop explores a range of simple and versatile binding techniques, including accordion folds, pamphlet stitch, and Japanese stab binding. Participants will learn how to transform paper into unique handmade books while gaining skills that can be used for journals, sketchbooks, or artist books.

This class is suitable for beginners and those looking to expand their creative practice. All supplies are provided, and participants are encouraged to bring drawings, prints, photographs, or other flat artwork they’d like to incorporate into their books.
By the end of the session, everyone will leave with several completed books and the knowledge to continue making more on their own.

Textile Painting

This beginner silk painting workshop introduces participants to the vibrant possibilities of painting on silk. Using fabric markers, liquid dyes, and resist techniques, you’ll learn how to create flowing lines, bold shapes, and beautiful color effects on silk and other textiles.

We’ll cover basic methods for applying color, using resists to control and define your design, and experiment with the unique qualities of various fabrics. The process is accessible, expressive, and suitable for all skill levels.

A silk scarf and painting supplies are provided. Participants will leave with their own hand-painted wearable artwork and the skills to continue exploring silk painting on their own.

Weaving

This beginner weaving workshop introduces participants to the fundamentals of weaving using simple cardboard and table looms. Through hands-on instruction, you’ll learn basic techniques for setting up a loom, creating texture and patterns with yarn and how to display your textiles. A demonstration of larger loom weaving will offer insight into expanded possibilities and processes. Participants are encouraged to experiment and incorporate nontraditional materials such as natural grasses, recycled plastics, fabric strips, and other found materials to create unique, personal textiles. All yarn and supplies are provided. The workshop is suitable for all skill levels, and participants will leave with their own small weaving and the knowledge to continue exploring this versatile medium.

Gyotaku

This introductory workshop explores the traditional Japanese art of gyotaku, or fish printing. Participants will learn how to apply ink to a real fish and transfer its form and delicate textures onto paper, creating a striking and detailed print.

We’ll cover the basic steps of preparation, inking, and printing, along with tips for mounting your work. The process is hands-on, experimental, and suitable for beginners as well as experienced artists.

All supplies are provided, including live fish, inks, and various papers. Participants will leave with their own unique gyotaku prints and an appreciation for this beautiful blend of art and nature.

By the end of the session, everyone will leave with several completed books and the knowledge to continue making more on their own.

Sculpture

This beginner-friendly sculpture workshop explores the creative possibilities of air-dry clay to create 3 dimensional forms. Participants will learn how to build strong, lightweight forms using armatures made from wire and aluminum foil, then shape and refine their sculptures with air clay. We’ll cover basic construction methods, tool use, and techniques for adding texture, volume and detail. Finishing options such as sanding, painting, and long lasting surface treatments will also be demonstrated, expanding the range of effects you can achieve with this simple, accessible material.

All supplies are provided, including wire, aluminum foil, air clay, and tools. This workshop is open to all skill levels, and participants will leave with a finished sculpture, new ideas for working in this versatile material, as well as inspiration to explore other, durable sculpting materials in the future.

Fruit Fabric Printing

We’ll cover simple design ideas, inking techniques and supplies, and how to create repeating patterns on fabric. The process is hands-on, experimental, and perfect for all skill levels.

All supplies are provided, including inks, brayers, foam blocks, and a tea towel or apron to print on. Participants will leave with a unique, functional textile and the skills to continue printing at home.
